On August 3, according to the Indian Economic Times, following AMD's announcement of investment in India at the Semicon India 2023 (Indian Semiconductor Forum) held in India on July 28, GlobalFoundires, a foundry, also began to consider investing in semiconductors in India.
According to sources, GF is looking for potential Indian partners to build fabs. However, sources said that previous discussions between GF and several Indian companies did not result in an agreement as the potential partners lacked reliable expertise and experience in electronics manufacturing. Discussions are ongoing and it could take years to finalize a specific plan.
Gf declined to comment.
According to reports, the Indian government is considering GF and ST to invest in the joint venture between Vedanta and Hon Hai because Vedanta and Hon Hai lack the experience to meet the Indian government's conditions worth billions of dollars in subsidies. In addition, Hon Hai has announced that it has withdrawn from the joint venture with Vedanta.
In order to build a local semiconductor manufacturing industry, India has reactivated a 760 billion Indian rupees (about $10 billion) subsidy program and relaxed the process threshold for producing chips from 28 nm (and more advanced) to 40nm.
Micron has already announced a $2.75 billion package and test facility in Gujarat, India. AMD has also announced that it will invest about $400 million in India over the next five years and will establish its largest R&D center in India's Bangalore tech hub. Semiconductor equipment giant Applied Materials also announced in June this year that it plans to invest $400 million over four years to establish a collaborative engineering center in India to focus on the development and commercialization of technology for semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
